FIRM PROFILE

Robert C. Montgomery is a graduate of Auburn University's School of Architecture and received the ACI Award for Outstanding Design Student of his graduating class.  While at Auburn, he was also recipient of the Alpha Rho Chi Bronze Medal and the Architecture Professional Fraternity's Medal for Leadership, Merit and Service.  He and his wife Audrey have three boys and have lived in Beaufort since 1990.  Rob is a registered Architect in the state of South Carolina.  As president of Montgomery Architecture & Planning, Inc., Rob is responsible for a wide variety of project types including Biological Research Facilities, Corporate Operations Centers, Residential (both custom and multi-family), Religious, Retail, and Medical.

Montgomery Architecture & Planning, Inc. is a Beaufort based firm, providing services which range from programming and feasibility studies to master planning, comprehensive design, and project delivery.  In addition to Rob, the firm consists of  Audrey R. Montgomery (B.A. in Architecture from Auburn and B.A. in Interior Design from the University of Georgia), Brian A. Coffman (B.A. in Architecture from Kent State University, registered Architect in the State of South Carolina), and Faith Ayer (office manager with over 10 years experience in the building industry).

Prior to forming Montgomery Architecture & Planning, Inc., Rob was partner at FMF Architects in Beaufort and an Associate with the firm of Kidd Plosser Sprague & Associates in Birmingham, Alabama.  He has also been on the contracting side of things having built four houses since the early eighties.  Throughout these experiences, Rob's love and understanding of the landscape instilled in him in his youth has been a constant rudder, giving direction and purpose to his design process.  His community involvement since coming to Beaufort has helped in developing a new dimension to his understanding - that is the adaptation of a region's inhabitants to their surroundings and vice-versa.

Montgomery comments, "The ties of a people to their land were at one time inextricable and the resulting culture was influenced greatly by the inherent natural characteristics of the region.  With today's technology and global influences, this is not necessarily true anymore.  I believe it should be and I strive to continue to be influenced in my work by the regional."

Rob counts among his affiliations:  Beaufort Chamber of Commerce, Beaufort County Arts Council, Lowcountry Rotary Club, Advisory Committee to the ACE Basin National Estuarine Research Reserve, Lady's Island Greenway Committee.  He holds memberships in the South Carolina Wildlife Federation, The Nature Conservancy, The U.S. Green Building Council, and the Beaufort County Open Land Trust.
